Other Projects

Since 2012 Megawatt Solutions provided engineering services for various smaller projects on HV and MV substations.
Some of these projects:

-
Arcelor Mittal new main substation board
-
Rooiwal purification plant new electrical board
-
Provided relays plus configuration to the supplier of the Pietermaritzburg CC
-
Refurbishment of IED’s for Swiziland main intake substations
-
Buszone extension at the Isang substation - Botswanna - REB500
-
Buszone commissioning at Harare main intake substation - REB500

Development of second generation 765kV protection and control: 2016-2019

In 2016 Siemens and Conco where tasked to develop the second generation of protection and control for Eskom breaker and a half substations arrangement.
The design was completely different from the first generation!

Megawatt Solutions did the complete engineering and development of test routines for Siemens. We also assisted Conco in the engineering and testing of the diameter control panel.

The project implemented IEC61850 extensively and many challenges had to be overcome in the migration of Eskom protection and control philosophy plus the latest IEC61850 concepts into the new hardware platforms.

The first panels where successfully installed and commissioned at Pinotage SS in Western Cape.

Commissioning of new 132/400kV diameter and 132kV Substation at Eskom Kappa SS: 2019-2020

Megawatt Solutions won the contract by Consolidated Power Projects to do the commissioning of the newly build 132kV Substation and the new 132/400kV breaker and a half diameter at Kappa SS.

This new diameter integrates with the newly build Perdekraal wind farm.

REB500 Buszone Protection - Ressano Garcia, Mosambiek: 2012-2016

Megawatt Solutions implemented the buszone protection at Ressano Garsia. It was done through the utilization of ABB’s REB500.

The setup at Ressano consisted of four gas powered power stations feeding into the Ressano SS and then onto the Mosambique / Eskom Grid.
The project was implemented through 5 phases.

REB670 Buszone Protection - Sebenza SS - Johannesburg: 2017-2018

Megawatt Solutions implemented the buszone protection at Sebenza SS for Conco. We also did all the Configurations for the Main 2 protection, which consisted of ABB relays.

The buszone protection was implemented through 6 REB670 relays and IEC61850

First 765kV Network, North to South, South Africa: 2006 - 2016

In 2006 the South African government approved the construction of a new 765kV network, which would run in parallel to the existing 400kV, North-South, transmission network.
We where part of a very small engineering team tasked to develop the complete protection suite, utilised to protect and control this network.

To meet the technical requirements posed on this new transmission network, a decision was made to change the substation arrangement from the conventional double busbar arrangement to a breaker and a half, diameter, arrangement.
The technology also utilized the use of IEC61850.
Megawatt Solutions assist with the design and FAT of the protection and control technology. Later on we would also do the write-up of the technical manual and we would assist with the commissioning of the six substations.

Koruson 400kV Transmission substation plus remote ends: 2023-2024

Megawatt Solutions won the contract by Optipower / Murray and Roberts to do the commissioning of the first self-built Koruson 400kV transmission substation. The station utilises the breaker and a half substation layout. It will be controlled and protected by the Eskom Phase 6 protection and control schemes.
We are also responsible for the commissioning of the remote end connection protection and control.

This new transmission substation will feed 1GW of energy, generated from various wind and solar farms in the area, into the Eskom grid.
